About IPAS
AN IP address to Autonomous System Number Converter
Why IPAS?
In many cases AS numbers give a more useful view of Internet
phenomena than IP addresses because they allow a higher level of
abstraction. Translation of IP addresses into AS number requires a
database giving the relationship and software to match the
longest prefix. The data is available from a number of sources, including the
Route Views Project.
The software is not difficult to write. However, often obtaining the data and
developing the code is a distraction from the measurement task at hand.
The IPAS server (ipas.nlanr.net) and IPAS package (including both C and perl
clients) are offered as a service to the measurement community by NLANR/moat.
In essence I needed this myself and didn't want to have to build it, so I
guessed others would be in the same boat.
IPAS's Origin
IPAS was originally created in September 2001, for the AMP project.
